This past weekend was yet another cool event with our mates from the Volkswagen Club of SA, this time they attacked the Zwartkops skidpan. Instead of the usual chucking cars around to see how things happen in the wet, the club enlisted the services of Anton Wannenburg from Gymkhana SA to set up a few courses for the entrants to navigate. It’s one thing doing a gymkhana in the dry, but in the wet things get a lot more technical. Most events like this see the guys with massive power on tap heading up the leaderboard, but with the way cars slide around on the wet, power isn’t your best friend – unless you really know how to use what’s on tap. As is the norm with VWCSA events, the club also has an open class for non-member and non-VW cars. This meant there were a few Subarus, a couple of BMWs and a few other marques entered, but of course, the majority of entrants were from the VAG side of life – which is why VAG Cafe was on hand to cover the event for you.

The day kicked off nice and early, and the weather played along, almost a little too much as by 10:00am it was cooking. The heat only really affected the drivers though as the cars stayed wet and cool thanks to the task at hand. There were a few cars that we were keen to see compete, and from the VW side of things we had our eye on Wikus Dippenaar in his DRD Caddy, the man knows how to pedal in these competitions. We were right to back him, we should have actually bet money because he finished at the top of the VW leaderboard. To make sure entrants had as much fun as possible, entries were limited to just 35 cars. This gave the guys multiple opportunities to try and improve their driving, but with the course being a mirror course, that was changed up during the day, most lost points thanks to going the wrong way – but that didn’t take away from the fun that was clearly had by all.

The most impressive looking runs came from the four-wheel drive cars, that little Audi S1 was being chucked around like a redheaded stepchild. We’re sure this didn’t help his times, but it sure looked like loads of fun. Dwayne Van Loggenberg’s blue S3 was one of the VAG cars that looked the best out there. That blue paint made for great photos, just like the blue Scirocco R. LeClue de Villiers entered his rare manual transmission Golf 6R, also running well. Another white runner was well-known VW man Morne Lourens in his neat white Mk5 GTi. There were two ladies in play on the day, one in a BMW and one in a wicked yellow SEAT Cupra – Jacquelina Kim Boaventura did great for her 1st event like this.  Take a look through the pics to see the rest of the field and what cars entered. We almost got to see a BMW M6 compete too, but the car only made it to the traffic lights near the racetrack where it managed to perfectly mount the centre barrier – traction control is best left on with that kind of horsepower.

As usual, it was a great day out with the VWCA guys – VAG Cafe is always made to feel right at home. There’s plenty more pics from the event and you’ll find them on the VAG Cafe Facebook page. We’ll catch you at the next wicked VAG-related event. Until then, keep it on the black stuff folks.
